Tokyo to Paris

Mmmm blogging whilst on holiday was more of a chore than i thought it would be.... but there's so many great pics, now that i'm back in Sydney i still want to share it.

Meeting some locals, who wanted to show off their art.

The train system was a challenge, but quick, efficient and surprisingly simple to work out. We used it a lot to maximise our short stopover.

Tokyo seems like dozens of little cities rather than suburbs around one main city area, vast! It's easier to catch the train somewhere then let the walking begin. We had a lovely walk from Harajuku to Shibuya. Constantly surrounded by hundreds of people you are never short of something or someone interesting to look at.

Tokyo went by too fast, and can't wait to go back and do it properly.

Travelling in Tokyo Tip # Beware of walking round train stations in peak hour! My husband and i got separated at Tokyo Station on the way to our plane. There was a flood of people exiting platforms, and when you are pulling luggage, a stroller and a 5 yr old - there's no room for error. Brad on his own, and me with Remi; we then discovered there's 3 different trains to the Airport, all varying in speed. We managed to meet up at the Airport train station an hour and half later after Remi and I quickly got on a slow train to the airport, and Brad managed to accidentally travel to the other side of Tokyo in the opposite direction from the airport, but then with the help of an American GI living in Tokyo he got on a super speedy train that arrived 10 minutes after me! We got to our plane as they were boarding, thanks Air France for being so helpful and escorting us to our gate.

The Bastille in Paris was a welcome sight after an 11 hour flight. Arriving as the sun set, walking up 5 flights of stairs to our apartment was a pleasure and a gorgeous view awaited us from our balcony.

We booked this great apartment (Appartement Folie Mericourt) through Cross Pollinate who have apartments and B&Bs all over europe. Travelling with kids Tip# stretch the budget to get kids their own bedroom, Remi slept like a dream when she had her own room. I think it seemed more like home.

We arrived in Tokyo on the Hottest Day in 100 years!

I finally made it to Tokyo, and with only a two day stopover before heading off to Paris I had to hit Fabric Town. Yes, there is actually a place called that in Tokyo - Nippori Fabric Town. (click this link for a great map.)

When you get there just follow the signs, you can't miss it.

But it's a sleepy town old Tokyo and the shops didn't start opening until about 10am. And as we arrived in Tokyo on the hottest day in 100 years, seriously.... this fabulous cafe was a welcome haven, Cafe Bird. Especially since my husband Brad and I had our 5 year old Remi as a traveling companion. Best iced coffee i've ever had and it really gave me the zing i needed to tackle the fabric.

With limited time i headed straight for the mother of Tokyo fabric - Tomato. There's actually 4 Tomato shops all on the same street specialising in accessories, interiors and variety fabrics.

So i spent about 2-3 hours running around about 5 different levels of the main variety fabric store and the notions/accessories next door. They only take CASH, and minimum cut is 1 metre so be prepared. I had Brad and Remi helping me to start with, but they saw my eyes glaze over and left me to it. There was much to keep them occupied in the area.

There were amazing japanese fabrics in traditional and contemporary designs, as well as lots international favourites from america. It just went on forever........

Another handy helper i had was a zine i bought from www.askingfortrouble.org

It's an amazing shopping guide for Tokyo and has directions on how to get to Nippori Fabric Town, it was only £1 and was great as Tokyo can be quite overwhelming.

Off on Holiday

I'm off in 9 days so the next blogging will be from

the streets of Tokyo. Then onto Paris and south into

the countryside and a taste of Spain. I couldn't go to

the south of France without a visit to Bilbao to see the Guggenheim.

On the hunt for new and fabulous fabrics and anything else i can find.

Where to find cool Lamp Bases - Top 5

When i display my lampshades at markets, i have a few on lamp bases but alas these are just to show off my shades and not for sale. My idea is that you buy a great new shade and recycle an old base you already have. Or hunt down a cool second hand one.

People often ask me, "Where do you find your lamp bases?"

(this one came from my mum & dad, one i grew up with and now my daughter has it in her room)

1. www.ebay.com.au

It's something you either have to be lucky at or very persistent. I have bought three great lamp bases, and made sure they were within pickup distance. All in working order, but i did get them checked by an electrician for safety and a bit of maintenance was needed. They were worth it though, all three for under $100; one carved floor lamp and two small table lamps.

2. South End of King St, Newtown

Boardwalk - 527 King st, great ceramic 60s and 70's style bases, & wooden standard lamps. Chat to chris who owns the store, nice guy.
531 on King - have quite a few standard floor lamps.

Towers Antiques - 539 King st, great selection from a variety of eras.

Rosebud Antiques - bit further down King st on the same side.

Wonderland on Alice - 104 Alice st, i think they are only open Saturdays. Real treasure trove.

3. Junktique - 62 Glebe Point Rd, over 3 levels.
Make sure you have lots of time, you can really get lost in there.

4. Mitchell Rd Gallery - 76 Mitchell rd, Alexandria.
You can't miss it, big yellow building and make sure you check out the auction house downstairs to try and get a bargain. But so much to look at upstairs.

5. Street Gods *FOR FREE*

I live in the inner west of Sydney and there is nothing like walking my dogs to find a treasure left on the footpath or in a back lane. I've found three of my best this way 2 marble beauties and a gorgeous wooden standard lamp. They all needed rewiring of course, and after a bit of tender loving care stripping back old varnish and polishing them up; they look amazing (especially with the right shade).

But don't forget about Vinnies, they usually display lamps in the window so have a look next time you walk past one.

If you are getting a lamp rewired, ask about having a cotton cloth covered cord. They look so much nicer than plastic and don't usually cost that much more.

There is so much choice now, but i find it does stretch me to my financial limit sometimes.

Just soooo tempting. But none the less, i wouldn't be able to create the quilts and cushions i do

with out the help of the late night shopping tool.

I can't go past etsy for variety and many sellers are so helpful with providing extra yardage, is there another colour available? or even cheaper postage options (Japan mail service can be expensive, so do enquire about SAL sea air lifted) so don't be afraid to ask questions. Sellers are based all over the world, but there are many Australian sellers too.

2. www.reprodepot.com

Again, big variety and based in America. Great for vintage and retro inspired designs.

Make sure you check out the shipping info to get the best value out of your order,

the postage is worked out in block amounts for a certain amount of fabric.

Beautiful Japanese designs in traditional and contemporary style. Fun kiddy and floral designs.

4. www.duckcloth.com.au

Great little Australian store, nice to order on our own shores and avoid the international postage!

Beautiful range with a handy navigation system to browse fabric by designer, colour, style and weight.

Neutral, Natural and getting in the Mix

What a bad blogger i am, too long between updates..... but i've been busy searching for new fabulous fabrics and found some. I came across a stack of discontinued and remnants which i'm having so much fun creating new cushions with and here's a taste. I decided to break up this lovely red rose cotton linen with some natural cotton linen and so happy with the outcome.

Busy making up some natural cotton linen cushions in different sizes too. Think they'll look great in a mix of colour and pattern on a lounge. They have my signature hand quilting too in a similar tone so it's oh so subtle.

Fabric Books are here. I had flower fairy books by Cicely Mary Barker when i was little and my little girl is going to love this. Best of all it comes in four designs. I've just got this fabric in so i'm having fun making them up and looking forward to experimenting with some mixing and matching.

It's great to introduce kids to something old world and Cicely was just a child in jolly old England in 1911 when she started creating her fairies. Now they are here for us to enjoy again.

Allie's Attic at Paddington Town Hall is the first one next Saturday 12th December, so get in early as i only have a limited number made up. My hands and poor little machine are looking forward to a rest....

I fell in love with this cute pink Snow White fabric and i just finished making it into a quilt. It's joined by a garden of flowers, chocolaty ladybirds and dots galore. Can't wait to make up it's purple sister fabric.

That's the last of my cherry fabric for the back, but the sunny yellow suits it so well.

With the organic bamboo wadding inside, it has a lovely drape. It's going to be difficult to let someone buy this one.

All Thingk Baby products have a care label attached, but I thought I'd include some care instructions here for future reference -

Caring for your Cushion
(cotton, cotton/hemp & cotton/linen fabric with quilted bamboo wadding)

Cold water, gentle wash cover with mild detergent
& line dry.

Insert can be hand washed, squeeze excess water & line dry

Caring for your Quilt

Drying in shade will preserve colours.

New Cushion Designs For The Nature Lover!

Just got in a few meters of this beautiful cotton/linen fabric from local designer Kristen Doran, loving the humming birds and little rabbits.

The peacock garden cotton/linen also makes up a great new cushion, and really fun to quilt with hand embroidery detailing; my favourite bit of the cushion making process. There is a layer of soft organic bamboo wadding quilted in every cushion which creates an extra soft place to rest your weary bones.

I'm new to blogging, but i can now see how people spend hours reading other people's blogs. I did a pretty simple search for "Felt" and came up with this amazing blog about Wool Felt and Textiles, which have been a growing passion for me over the past few years.

This london based designer anne kyyro quinn, makes me want to experiment with felt and create some sculptural pieces for my own home.

2009 has been declared the Year of Natural Fibres and to help celebrate, in May there was a Felt Festival in Felletin (where else could you have it?!), France which was to demonstrate the beauty and versatility of felt with lots of workshops, displays and some serious felt networking for industry types from all over europe.

I first fell in love with felt on a visit to Munich in 2006, where i stumbled upon the amazing Daimer Filze shop. Wall to wall felt like a rainbow. I bought some beautiful animal shapes and flowers which went into my first lampshade creation for my daughter Remi.

I like to hand stitch the felt shapes on to avoid unnecessary glueing.

This adds to the hand made design and gives me great creative satisfaction too. To top it off the fabric i covered the shade in is a blend of Yak Hair and Hemp, so soft and great texture.

These shades are from the range i sell at the markets, and even just little details like the small dots; only 8mm in diameter, create a great effect! They are so cute, and i love to utilise the small details in the fabric too, the natural edging often goes unseen. But why not make it into a feature?

The fabric on this forest shade is great, when the light is off it's a subtle shade of yellow/cream but once it's illuminated the colour totally changes to a fantastic celery colour creating a magical green backdrop for a flowery forest.

These sweet ducks get a lot of attention. Love mixing the textures of rough cotton and soft wool felt. I enjoy a lot of colour, but sometimes you just can't go past simple white on white.

First Time At Fox Markets

My first time at Fox Studios was a lovely sunny day with a great space to set up in. I'm finding each market a different experience with the best product sales of the day being different every time. Cushions and dolls have always been popular, but selling my first lampshade was definitely a thrill - beautiful japanese print of french style Alice in Wonderland, a favourite of mine.

Fox best product of the day was my new range of felt cards with hand stitching details.

Doody St Market, Alexandria

My first time at Doody St was a good learning experience. The weather didn't bring too many people out, but i met a lot of lovely stall holders who had great advice for me. Lots of interest and more names for my mailing list.

Vintage Find in Binda

On a relaxing weekend in the country i found a hidden treasure at a garage sale in Binda, which is near Crookwell, which is half an hour from Goulburn NSW. Great cotton Bias Binding from the 60's, 70's and 80's if i had to guess. Made in Australia too! Can't wait to use these, probably on lampshades.

Fell in love with the cotton Ric Rac too, made in Japan and was labelled at the bargain price of 12cents. Originally bought at Downes Department store.

Most of it was still in it's original wrapping!

Sunday 5th July at Mathilda's Market in Lane Cove was a great first market experience. It was very reassuring to have some other first timers around me. Once the doors opened it wasn't long before i made my first sale of a Softy Toy Owl and it kept steadily going from there.

The Softy Toys were a big success. I'll definitely need more for next time

I took some new shots of my range, some of which will be featured on the Mathilda's Markets website to advertise my stall. Thanks to brad and his expertise in photoshop they came up really well -

Working with the bamboo batting is so easy when putting the quilts together.

This little doll comes from Kristen Doran Design, i'll post some pics of other cute ones from Saffron Craig soon. Love the simplicity of the design and easy to sew together.

Hand stitching the felt shapes on minimises the use of glue, a couple of well placed stitches feels right with my hand crafted style.

Mixing Japanese fabric and German felt dots.

I bought some beautiful stamps from Japan on Etsy, and they are so fun to use. I can't resist overseas design, but so happy i found the Recycled Card (post consumer waste) just up the road.

1st market in july

I've got my first market coming up on Sunday 5th july, from 9am to 1pm at Mathilda's Market, St Ignatius College Riverview, Tambourine Bay Rd, Lane Cove. Here's some photos of what i'll be selling - handmade kid's quilts, cushions in super cute fabrics from Japan, handsewn lampshades with gorgeous felt applique from Germany, lovely softie dolls from Saffron Craig and Kristen Doran designs and handprinted gift cards.

The hand stitching detail is small, but a fun addition to a cute design.
